Is Mass Effect 3's "Alternative" Romance Path Bad?

Mass Effect 3
Bioware
Due Q1 of 2012
Xbox 360, PS3, Microsoft Windows
Single Player

Even though only a day has passed since it's been announced, a lot of people have voiced concern over the new option for Commander Sheppards love arcs. Many fans believe that this new "gay" Sheppard love arc will create inconsistencies and continuity errors within the game's canon.

Specifically, fans argue that because there were no "gay" options in the first two Mass Effect games, there shouldn't be any in the third. The games background stories, as well as dialogue choices in previous games have sculpted the relationships with the existing crew, relationships and friends. Many people are worried that, for the sake of just adding a new sexual experience (a la Dragon Age) that characters will make dramatic, sexually suggestive or aggressive stances in new dialogue options.

For the sake of curiosity, what are your opinions on this?

  1. They are using the "lets bring in new players by trying to please another demographic but alienate our core fans" tactic. Using the sales figures from the previous 2 installments, they should know that this 'option' isn't necessary. In fact, if I had it my way, I would take out this romance crap altogether. Why? Because that's the stuff that ends up dragging the action down. Look at the summer blockbuster action movies. They all have love plots thrown in so that the dude can see his movie and his girl (who really wanted to see the rom-com) gets the love story so everyone is pleased and thus higher revenue. I've seen very few movies that were strictly for the guys without the romance junk. I've seen more movies that would do better without it. Video games are NOT movies, they shouldn't follow the same script. Also, look how they toned down the 'sex' scene in ME2 compared to ME1. Will the next one be watered down more? And why does such a scene even need to be there? Are there guys out there masturbating to this stuff? Is that why its there? So the basement dwellers have something to wank to? Plenty on the internet for that, I really don't need it in my games. All it does it make my woman ask "WTF is this?"

  3. I wish they would just remove the whole romance thing all together.

  4. Well it's not like it is actually mandatory. If it's an option I don't see anything wrong with it. Though they would probably please everyone by removing all that romance crap.

  5. I find it cool that you can bring your personal believes into the video game. I just don't want to hear people bitching about it. Its like everything has to have a shock factor to be noticed. This is another.

  6. They might as well just keep it the way it was. I actually enjoy the romance plots, because it can develop a bit of a bond between you and that character. I know I was worried for Jack in the suicide mission in ME2, even though I had her with me.

Anyway, keep it the way it was for the sake of consistency, that's all.
